How Long Does Permanent Eyeliner Last?

Appropriately applied, eyeliner can give the appearance of thicker lashes and draw attention to the eye. It can change the shape of your eyes and create instant drama. But there is no question; eyeliner can be difficult to master. Because of this, the beauty industry has seen the increasing popularity of permanent eyeliner. With permanent eyeliner, you can achieve the exact look you did before, without the hassle and time.

What is Permanent Eyeliner?

Permanent eyeliner is a cosmetic procedure that provides the appearance of eyeliner through a technique similar to a tattoo. When you get the eyeliner applied, a technician will use a tool to deposit pigment into the lash line. But unlike traditional tattoos, the pigment will only enter the first few layers of skin.

Permanent eyeliner is made to replace traditional eyeliner. When you go in for your appointment, you will be able to choose the thickness of the eyeliner and the shape and color. It’s essential to select a style and color you are comfortable with as, unlike traditional eyeliner, permanent eyeliner does not simply wipe off.

How Long Does Permanent Eyeliner Typically Last?

Permanent eyeliner isn’t technically permanent. In actuality, it is more or less semi-permanent. Because the pigment only enters the upper layers of skin, it will need to be reapplied. However, this is a good thing. Trends come and go, and your personal preference may change. When it’s time to refresh your eyeliner, you can change the application to what suits you.

On average, permanent eyeliner lasts about three years. In some cases, the eyeliner may last longer, but eventually, you will see a deterioration of the quality of the eyeliner tattoo. Additionally, your technician will likely recommend a touch-up appointment between 18 to 24 months after the initial application to help keep the eyeliner looking fresh and fix any areas that may be fading quicker than the rest of the eye.

Factors That Influence How Long Your Permanent Eyeliner Will Last

After your permanent eyeliner appointment, your makeup artist will give you tips to help you keep your eyeliner looking its best. It’s important to understand that each person may respond differently to the eyeliner pigment, meaning your eyeliner may need a new application sooner or later than expected.

Factors that affect the look and longevity of your permanent eyeliner include:

Follow-Up Care

After your initial eyeliner application, you will go home with aftercare instructions on how to care for your eyes in the hours and days following your appointment. It is essential to follow these instructions. If you do not take care of your eyes following your appointment, you may not achieve your desired results. Leaving you having to go in for reapplication, or your pigment may fade sooner than expected.

Aftercare is also critical to your health and personal hygiene. If you touch your eyes or pick at any scabs, it could result in damage or infection.

Your Skin Type

Different skin types have different reactions to eyeliner pigment. Traditionally, individuals with dry skin will see longer-lasting results because the oils in your skin can push the pigment out, leaving less pigment in the skin. Over time, this will cause the tattoo to fade more quickly.

The Type of Eyeliner You Choose

As mentioned above, there are several options for permanent eyeliner. You should always choose the style you want to be there until your next application. However, understand that your style will affect how long the eyeliner lasts. For example, thicker eyeliner will typically last around three years, whereas lash enhancements will likely need a refresh much sooner.

Your Daily Routine

Several other factors can affect how long your permanent eyeliner looks its best. Notably, your health and beauty routine can affect the appearance of your eyeliner. Things that may shorten the effects of your eyeliner include:

  • Certain medications or health conditions
  • Excessive sweating
  • Sun exposure
  • Regular use of eyedrops
